Now That's Entertainment

Founded in 1968, Hastings Entertainment, Inc. is a leading multimedia entertainment retailer that combines the sale of new and used CDs, books, videos and video games, as well as boutique merchandise, with the rental of videos and video games in a superstore format. They currently operate 153 superstores throughout the United States but lacked a strong online presence and sought Fry to design a site to showcase their merchandise.

CHALLENGE

In developing the new site, Hastings had several goals in mind. First, the Web channel needed to generate additional revenue for the business without cutting into existing revenue. The design and functionality of the site needed to deliver an experience that would drive it to becoming the number one store in the chain. The redesign needed to enhance the online experience and push additional traffic and revenue to the stores.

SOLUTION

The site was built on Fry’s Open Commerce Platform (OCP) to give it true e-commerce functionality and to accommodate Hastings’ six million SKUs. Rich, dynamic Flash technology was implemented to engage customers in an interactive and surprising way and the site was designed to be as interactive as the products it sells. The site experience provides a stronger connection between the in-store and online customer experience, with new checkout options for customers who wish to place pre-orders for upcoming new products. Other technologies implemented to enhance the user experience include Endeca for improved search, Bazaarvoice for customer reviews, and Certona for enhanced merchandising and cross-sell capabilities.

RESULTS

The new Hastings Entertainment site launched in August 2009. The new site experience has delighted customers by offering a distinct online shopping experience that could only come from the Hastings brand.
